Whether you’re picking out your favourite chocolate from the tub, biting the head off a gingerbread biscuit, or sneaking an extra mince pie when no one’s looking, the holidays are full of sweet traditions we all love. This time of year is made for indulgence – and we’re all for it – just remember to savour slowly and enjoy each bite!
Opt for softer variaties
If you’re wearing braces or clear aligners, a little extra care goes a long way in keeping your treatment on track throughout the festive period. Soft chocolates and melt-in-the-mouth sweets are usually brace-friendly, but harder toffees, candy canes, or very crunchy gingerbread can be risky for brackets and wires. Opting for softer versions, breaking treats into smaller pieces, or enjoying them mindfully can help you avoid any unexpected orthodontic emergencies over Christmas.
For both brace-wearers and aligner-wearers, it’s best to enjoy sugary foods with a meal rather than grazing throughout the day. Eating sweets alongside a meal reduces the number of sugar “attacks” on your teeth, and once you’ve finished, give your teeth a clean and then try to leave a four-hour break before your next meal or snack.
And for those wearing aligners, just remember to remove them before snacking and pop them back in once you’ve given your teeth a quick clean. If you graze all day and repeatedly remove your aligners, they may feel tight when you reinsert them – and it can become difficult to meet the recommended 22 hours of wear per day. Sticking to set mealtimes really helps keep treatment on track.
A little extra care
Of course, your smile deserves its share of holiday cheer too! Between all the chocolates, biscuits and festive buffets, try rinsing with water after sugary snacks, brushing twice a day (three if you’re really in the Christmas spirit!), and keeping up with flossing or using interdental brushes.
A quick clean after your festive feasting helps protect your enamel, prevent cavities and keep your gums healthy – so your smile stays bright right into the New Year.
Christmas treats are meant to be enjoyed, so tuck in and make the most of every delicious moment – just remember to treat your smile with a little love while you do!
Wishing you a merry, magical Christmas and a bright New Year!
